Increasing density of computing power, higher energy demands and pressure for operational efficiency are forcing companies to seek solutions that combine high reliability and low operating costs. One of the most efficient technologies is <strong>free cooling<\/strong>, also known as <strong>freecooling<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At SafeDX we use <strong>indirect freecooling<\/strong>, which allows to significantly reduce the energy consumption of cooling, ensure stable operation and at the same time minimize the ecological footprint of the data center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is freecooling?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Freecooling is a technology that uses infrastructure cooling <strong>naturally low outdoor temperatures<\/strong>. If it is cold enough outside, there is no need to activate compressor units (chillers), which are very energy intensive.<br>Instead, they only work to cool <strong>Fans<\/strong> or <strong>circulation pumps<\/strong>, resulting in dramatic electricity savings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Types of freecooling<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Freecooling is differentiated according to the way the outdoor air is used:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Direct freecooling<\/strong> - conditioned outdoor air flows into the interior<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Indirect freecooling<\/strong> - outside air does not enter the interior anywhere; cooling takes place through the heat transfer medium<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In the Czech Republic (and in SafeDX) it is primarily used <strong>indirect free cooling<\/strong>, which is more secure for data centre environments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The principle of indirect freecooling<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Indirect freecooling works with <strong>antifreeze<\/strong> (usually a mixture of water and glycol) that circulates between the outdoor dry cooler and the indoor heat exchanger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How it works step by step<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Cool outdoor air<\/strong> cools the glycol in<strong>dry cooler<\/strong> located outside the building.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The cooled medium flows through the pipe to<strong>internal fan-coil exchanger<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the heat exchanger, the glycol draws heat from the server room or process room.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The heated fluid is returned to the outdoor radiator where the cycle continues.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>This process is bypassed <strong>without compressors<\/strong>, which is the main reason for the significantly lower energy consumption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why indirect freecooling is ideal for data centres<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Data centres run 24\/7 and their operating costs are largely made up of electricity consumption. Freecooling allows you to use the natural source of cold - the outside temperature - to the maximum extent possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The biggest advantages of indirect freecooling:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. Significant electricity savings<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Compressor units have the highest consumption in air conditioning technology.<br>Freecooling:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>minimizes their operation,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reduces <strong>PUE<\/strong> (Power Usage Effectiveness),<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>enables operational savings of tens of percent.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In the climatic conditions of the Czech Republic freecooling can be used <strong>most days of the year<\/strong>, often up to 60-80 % of time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. High safety and stability of operation<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Indirect free cooling <strong>does not bring outside air in<\/strong>, so:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>there is no risk of dust contamination,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>there are no changes in humidity,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>respects strict data center standards.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This makes it the ideal technology for <strong>critical IT infrastructure<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. Low operating costs and longer technology lifetime<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Due to the lower use of compressor chillers:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>less mechanical wear,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>longer equipment life,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>reduced service costs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4.
